The local supply of hydroxychloroquine has been brought to critical levels by increased use for COVID-19. However, the the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA), Philippine Food and and Drug Administration (Phil FDA) and Department of Health (DOH) have reiterated that antimalarials are for COMPASSIONATE USE in this setting. It is not to be used prophylactically when exposed to suspected or confirmed COVID-19 cases.
Unlike its potential role in COVID-19, clinical data on hydroxychloroquine has established its essential role in achieving and maintaining disease remission in rheumatic diseases like Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).
